The mitral valve is the valve between the left atrium and the left ventricle, which prevents backflow of blood from the left ventricle to the left atrium during systole. Thus the closing of this valve is responsible for the first heart sound (the bicuspid contributes some sound to S1).
The mitral valve may become stenosed, regurgitant, or there may be mixed disease, or valve prolapse.
