The management of stroke consists of:

  • diagnosis - the National Service Framework for older people states that all patients with an acute stroke require urgent admission to hospital
  • determination of risk factors for stroke
  • supportive care for the majority of acute patients
  • acute interventions in a few patients
  • prevention of complications
  • secondary prevention
  • rehabilitation
