Lentigo maligna melanoma

Lentigo maligna melanoma (which accounts for 4% to 15% of cutaneous melanomas) occurs classically in the elderly, on sun-exposed sites (1), and is preceded by lentigo maligna, the in situ growth phase (2).

Lentigo maligna melanoma describes the vertical invasion of the dermis by the melanocytes and is associated clinically with the development of raised nodules within the lesion. Metastasis to lymph nodes is less common than for other malignant melanomas. Early intervention, e.g. by cryotherapy, during the lateral growth phase carries a good prognosis.
