Bacteroides is a common cause of hepatic, subhepatic, pelvic and splenic abscesses. This infection often occurs as a sequelae to abdominal surgery. Pus produced in this type of infection has a characteristic smell.
Other manifestations of Bacteroides infection include pelvic infections such as endometritis, Bartholin's abscess and Fournier's gangrene.
