A positive Mantoux test and positive results on synovial biopsy confirm the diagnosis.
Radiologically, early in the course there is soft tissue swelling and diffuse rarefaction of a wide area of bone either side of the joint. There is widening of the joint space. Later irregular narrowing of the joint space and bone erosion can be seen.
