Clinical features and diagnosis

Authoring team

Breast cysts most commonly occur in peri-menopausal women, and they present as smooth discrete lumps which may be painful.

Cysts are easily seen on ultrasound and mammography when they appear to have a characteristic halo.

Diagnosis is established on fine needle aspiration when non-bloodstained fluid is aspirated and the lump disappears.
