Dermoid cyst of the skin

A dermoid cyst is a consequence of a developmental abnormality where fragments of ectoderm are left behind at the lines of embyrological skin fusion. Dermoid cysts are result of cystic change in these ectodermal remnants. The cysts that are formed are lined by stratified squamous epithelium and contain ectodermal elements e.g. keratin, hair, sebaceous glands.
